My Role:
Creating a clear, welcoming hospital entrance poster during times of uncertainty (COVID pandemic)
background: the problem
Current poster had a lot of information and was not visually welcoming to the patients and visitors at such an uncertain time that was happening around the world. In times of need, messaging had to be clear but also inviting.

objective
To improve poster by making the content more easier to understand by using visuals and clearly convey the message that the hospital is here to help.
research, design & development
Working along with the patient education and engagement team, patient partnership, quality and safety, and marketing, I was able to gather information to support user's needs and design accordingly.
During this phase I explored ways to make the poster more welcoming and ways to make the visuals more easier to understand. I conducted an environmental scan anaylsis of posters from other institutions and collected data points of their strengths and weaknesses. Next I brainstormed ideas with my team members to conceptualize a welcoming visual by thinking of what makes people feel welcomed. This led to thinking of the patient’s journey when visiting the hospital and thinking of what they would like to experience when they enter into a hospital. After several ideas were drafted out, one concept that stuck in my mind was people would like to be greeted with a smile. Drafts were shown to stakeholders and we had narrowed it down to smile concept.
Below are some mockup concepts:

Prototype Design & User Feedback
I explored two different layout formats because during the initial feedback some did not like the initial layout. I rendered out both layouts and conducted a survey with a group of patients to get their thoughts and feedback on the poster. After collecting results and hearing from the stakeholders, Option 2 was chosen as the final design.

significance/outcome
This entrance poster was the first line of communication before a patient/visitor enters the hospital so it was important to have a clear and engaging poster that help them guide their way and also let them know that the hospital staff was here to help. This poster has been used for at least 3 years and seen by 10,000+ patient/visitors who were able to navigate hospital in a respectful manner.
